When reality takes a N O S E D I V E . . .

In technology recently China has adopted a point scoring system, which isn’t that different from a credit score. This digitally interactive credit score is part of alipay app, the fast growing alternative to using conventional ways to pay, within the app window are many options and one particular app shows its optional to participate:

“Zhima Credit is the embodiment of personal credit,”

Read more about this here…

“That’s why social credit ideally requires both coercive aspects and nicer aspects, like providing social services and solving real problems. It’s all under the same Orwellian umbrella.” – Samantha Hoffman, International Institute for Strategic Studies

It’s addictive form of point scoring based on your behaviors, set up as a rewards based system offering perks for people with good scores. The algorithm used considers if you pay your bills, what you choose to purchase, the level of education you have, even who you are friends with and their scores.

This all eerily sounds like the Black Mirror episode called Nosedive in which a woman is desperate to boost her social media score hits the jackpot when she’s invited to a swanky wedding, but the trip doesn’t go as planned.

The first episode of season 3 aired 21 October 2016, the script writers Michael Schur and Rashida Jones wrote based on a story developed by Charlie Brooker the series creator, with Joe Wright directing.

Lacie (Bryce Dallas Howard) lives in a world where people can rate each other between one to five stars for every type of interaction they have. She is overly obsessed with her ratings, and is chosen by her popular childhood friend (Alice Eve) as the maid of honour for her wedding. On her way to the wedding, things take a turn for the worse when she gets angry at a customer service worker, causing a domino effect as her rating takes a nosedive. You can watch the episode feature here:

Bryce Dallas Howard’s performance in the episode earned her a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination. The episode’s pastel colours would distinguish it from most Black Mirror episodes which have a darker, more oppressive tone. It falls within the middle of the pack when it comes to its lighter and less consequential ending, but sometimes real life can be darker than fiction.

You can watch Black Mirror on Netflix.

Dark horse comics!

Dark Horse Comics , the legendary folks who , for more than 20 years have released excellent companion pieces and even an alternate history to our beloved Alien franchise . Dark Horse have released over a dozen stories in their long history associated with Aliens . Some are silly and some are well written and drawn companion pieces that work in ways that some might criminally overlook .

Lets take a second to consider how and why comic books are a great medium that works alongside our favourite films .

For one , comics released in between films have always personally helped me stay focused on my obsession with everything Alien . They keep me interested , wanting more , and most importantly letting me know personally ” what works ” and ” what doesn’t ”

Second of all , I’ve always felt that the comics and or novels for that matter are the safest place for new and bold ideas to be explored . The ‘Music of the Spears’ is a great example of this , it’s completely out of left field and I personally wouldn’t be upset if a film version never got made; but on its own it’s very unique and entertaining in its own right . So take note Disney , I don’t think we need an alien film about a symphony of hate, lol .

Over the years Dark Horse have released some stories that I think with some expansion in regards to length could have served as the basis for direct sequels or standalone films in the franchise . ‘Aliens Salvation’ comes to mind . It’s unique in terms of setting and fresh enough ( at the time at least ) that it would have made a very exciting film . In my personal opinion it stayed very true to the themes of the first three films . It honours the source material while being different enough that it doesn’t come across as a boring re-tread of things we’ve already seen .

In the past year ‘Defiance’ and ‘Dead Orbit’ have been released and I couldn’t be happier . Dead Orbit perfectly captured the claustrophobia and that gritty ” lived in ” feel the first films evoked .

Aliens Defiance was a great addition , such a nice treat to open a comic and see things like the compression suit , the Muthur computer room , pulse rifles and just the overall aesthetic of the films captured perfectly . I absolutely loved the main protagonist. She’s moody , strong willed , and better yet flawed . I could not get enough of the supporting characters either . The story itself felt a tad unfocused towards the end or few final issues but after the extraordinary first few issues it was a lot to live up to .

I’m not sure what Disney buying Fox means for the future of Dark Horse’s long established history with the franchise ; but one can only hope that they can recognize the great works that have been done over the years, and that they stay associated with it .

I encourage anyone who reads this to give Dark Horse Comics a look if you haven’t already , the titles released as of late felt like next level stuff that deserves to be read .

The Davidic Covenant

In the bible there are lots of Covenants, one such Covenant is the Davidic Covenant. David, after bringing the Arc of the Covenant to Jerusalem lacked a temple to store it, he intended on building one until the prophet Nathan foretold he would not. But his descendants will. I will highlight important points to focus on:

“When thy days are fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, that shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. I will be his father, and he shall be my son: if he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men; but my loving kindness shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee. And thy house and thy kingdom shall be made sure for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever” (2 Sam 7:12-16)

What does this mean for Android David?

When thy days are fulfilled, When David is dead/turned off.

I will set up thy seed after thee, that shall proceed out of thy bowels, David used Doctor Elizabeth Shaw’s reproductive system to create the perfect organism. His children.

I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever, Weyland Yutani will ensure his legacy will live on which could mean through order 937. His children will establish a kingdom and his legacy will live on through them, I suspect this could be LV-426 since that’s where David’s successor the Queen will reign.

I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men, this may relate to David’s transmission to Weyland Yutani that leads many to die a horrible death birthing Xenomorphs.

“If you do this, there will be no turning back, my creatures shall be set loose, to rule this galaxy.” David, Advent Transmission B88Q

The provisions of the Davidic covenant include, then, the following items:

  1. David is to have a child, yet to be born, who shall succeed him and establish his kingdom. Which in Android David’s terms, the Alien Queen.
  2. This son (Solomon) shall build the temple instead of David. For Android David it’s a Alien Hive on Origae-6 or LV-426.
  3. The throne of his kingdom shall be established forever. Which leads me to believe it may not be LV-426 as the hive is destroyed.
  4. The throne will not be taken away from him (Solomon) even though his sins justify chastisement. So even though David’s children spread death and destruction, they cannot and will not be stopped.
  5. David’s house, throne, and kingdom shall be established forever. There will be a xenomorph homeworld, one that cannot be destroyed or despite people trying to destroy the xenomorphs it will be impossible.

Michelangelo’s David and Android David

“It-he held out a hand and made contact with the stone. It was cool, dry, unyielding. Not Human, yet so very human” – David, Alien: Covenant Novelisation

The statue of David in Weyland’s ‘White Room’ is the very same Biblical David.

Many parallels can be drawn between the two:

Biblical David is the youngest of 8, and so is Android David because he is the first prototype android.

Biblical David was a talented composer and musician for King Saul of Israel, Peter Weyland who sits upon the Carlo bugatti Throne chair in Alien: Covenant; head of his empire Weyland Industries, asks David to play the piano. Composing his own rendition of Das Rheingold, Entry of the Gods into Valhalla by Wagner.

Both were anointed, chosen over the biological children of their King and expected to carry on their legacy.

The Mayan Creation Myth

One myth says nothing and no one existed in the beginning except two creators, Tepeu, meaning “sovereign” also “one who conquers” or “one who is victorious” and Gucumatz which translates literally as “Quetzal Serpent” or “Feathered Serpent.”

One time, the two creators sat with each other and created the world. Whatever they thought came into existence, so they thought up the entire earth (birds, trees, land, water, etc.). The two creators wanted beings that could praise them, so they created beings of clay that didn’t last very long, as they fell apart when wet. Their next sets of beings were made of wood, but caused much trouble and didn’t satisfy Tepeu and Gucumatz, so the two creators sent a flood to get rid of their creation and start anew.

David and the Engineers are the two creators, but only David rises as victorious. After arriving on Planet 4 and wiping out the Engineers with his flood, he set about creating things using the black liquid. The Engineers were the gardeners of space, seeding life everywhere. In the beginning of Prometheus the Engineer, once drunk from the sacrificial cup dissolved into the waterfall. From his sacrifice came mankind, who Ridley Scott had said:

“If the planet went wrong, they would want to wipe it clean. But that could take 500 years. When they revisit – because different visitors would come back and see we’re not doing so well – they would look at these human beings that are jerks, that are killing the planet, killing themselves, can’t settle down, they’re like a bunch of children. We should wipe it clean…We will drop some of that stuff and wipe it clean. It could come in the form of a plague. In effect, the thing that is dropped is a plague. It kills everything beneath it, but it is insidious and spreads everywhere. It will take about a year, and you have got nothing left except flora. No fauna. The meat is gone.”

David had also said something similar

I am David, son of the late Peter Weyland; your company’s founder. Following his vision I have gone to the far edges of space; and with the aid of Dr Elizabeth Shaw I found a rotting Paradise. I washed this world clean as a gift to her, we could have built anew, a second Eden… But she refused. What choice did I have? She was the perfect specimen. I tried so desperately to make her more than human… Evolved. But without her cooperation, I had to salvage her parts to begin work on my masterpiece.” – David, Advent

Gucumatz derives from the K’iche’ word q’uq, referring to the Resplendent Quetzal Pharomachrus mocinno, a brightly coloured bird of the cloud forests of southern Mesoamerica. This is combined with the word kumatz “snake”. The male Resplendent Quetzal boasts iridescent blue-green tail feathers, measuring up to 1 metre (3.3 ft) long and were prized by the Mayan elite. Its blue-green feathers symbolised vegetation and the sky, both symbols of life for the ancient Mayans, while the bright red feathers of the bird’s chest symbolised fire. This combination gave a profound religious symbolism to the bird.

The winged sun Weyland Yutani Symbol follows a similar colour palette, althought I am not sure if this was intentional.

The snake was a Mayan symbol of rebirth due to its habit of shedding its skin to reveal a fresher one underneath. In Alien movies the Chestburster and Hammerpede shed its skin before taking on a much larger form; in Prometheus (2012) Milburn finds the shed skin of the Hammerpede but it is never revealed to us if this was its final form.

Q’uq’umatz has power over all levels of the Mayan universe, there’s an indicated a sexual duality between his masculine feathered serpent aspect and his feminine association with water and wind. The Xenomorph conceptually does not have a gender, it was supposed to be a sexless monster.

Among the K’iche’ Q’uq’umatz not only appeared as a feathered serpent, he was also embodied as an eagle and a jaguar, he was also known to transform himself into a pool of blood. The sleek blackness of the Big chap and the way it slowly prowls could be paralleled to that of a jaguar god (Xbalanque), it’s said to have the ability to cross between worlds. As for the pool of blood, in Alien 1979 Lambert/Veronica Cartwright slipped in a pool of blood when splattered by Kane’s Chestburster and in Alien: Covenant Faris & Karine both slip in the pool of blood from Ledward’s Backburster.

The deity Q’uq’umatz was sometimes represented by a snail or conch shell and was associated with a flute made from bones. David’s lab was covered with Shells and Illustrations of Shells, he has also made a few recorders and flutes from the Engineers bones.

As well as being associated with water, Q’uq’umatz was also associated with clouds and the wind. In the Divine Comedy the lovers are thrown about in a whirlwind storm, as were the Covenant crew as they descended into Planet 4’s atmosphere. In Prometheus Elizabeth Shaw and Charlie Holloway were also blown about with turbulent winds on returning to the Prometheus from the Engineer Pyramid.

The Apache False Myth

“Breathe on the nostrils of a horse and it’ll be yours for life, but you have to get close. You have to earn its trust” – David, Alien: Covenant

2017-12-16 (1)

There is a false myth about being able to tame a wild horse by just breathing on its nose, Ridley Scott used to ride horses when he was younger and believed this to be something the horses liked. Despite its inaccuracy, he liked the primal connection the android tries to forge with the Neomorph.

Most war parties were assembled to steal horses—it was easier to steal horses than to catch a wild Mustang. One of the myths that comes from white man’s stories is that Indians could blow their breath into a wild mustangs nose and tame it. This is ridiculous and untrue. Even the most skilled horse-tamers and horse whisperers cannot do this immediately. The feral wild horses were hard to catch, hard to tame and hard to keep. “Once a wild one, always a wild one.” – How Horses Transformed The Plains Indians

What does the horse mean to the Indian? Native Apache people have a deep connection to animals; they carry them through battle safely and it brings them home to their family. The Apache Indians saw it a gift from their creator.

I thought maybe the line has something to do with the Native American Indian creation myth, only two tribes have a “Flood Myth”. The most common theme in Native American Indian creation stories is the deluge. See The Mayan Creation Myth

King Saul, David, Sir Peter Weyland & Android David

Painting By Rembrandt, Public Domain.

God is angered when Saul unlawfully offers a sacrifice and later disobeys a divine instruction and sends an evil spirit to torment Saul, so his advisors send for David who is skilled composer and soothes Saul by playing the lyre. David then enters the service of the king as one of the royal armour-bearers.

In the beginning of Alien: Covenant, David plays the piano at Peter Weyland’s request, and in Prometheus David is shown arming Weyland with a walking device which could be seen as his ‘armour.’

A giant Goliath issues a challenge to the Israelites during a war, requesting a champion to face him in single combat. David declares that he can defeat Goliath, facing him without armour and armed only a sling he defeats giant.

This parallels with David’s journey to Planet 4, only he defeats 2 million Engineers by dropping the payload from the Dreadnought.

Saul grows anxious as David’s popularity soars, he fears that David may steal his throne so Saul plots his death. Saul’s son Jonathan, concerned for David warns him of the murder plot and he flees. Saul and David reconcile after David demonstrated he meant him no harm by infiltrating Saul’s camp and removing his spear and a water jug from his side while Saul and his guards slept. Saul sends the prophet Samuel to anoint David as his successor.

In the David viral advertising he is described as the most popular model, present in nearly every household and work environment. Weyland is concerned about his mortality as he is reminded constantly of this when facing his natural daughter Meredith Vickers, he wishes to transcend his human form to become a God. David is proof that he is no mere mortal, but a creator who can make something from ‘nothing.’

When Jonathan, Saul and Ishbosheth(Saul’s only surviving heir) is killed in battle, David is anointed king over Judah and Israel.

In the Prometheus Blu-ray menu, under Happy Birthday, David. Sir Peter Weyland describes David as his legacy and true heir.

King David conquers Jerusalem between 869-1003 BCE and brings the Ark of the Covenant to the city. David’s proposes to build a temple to store the Ark, but Nathan forbids him prophesying that God has made a covenant with the house of David stating, “your throne shall be established forever.”

If you do this, there will be no turning back, my creatures shall be set loose, to rule this galaxy.” David, Advent Transmission B88Q to Weyland Yutani

Which parallels with the end of Alien: Covenant, emerging victorious and walking amongst his ‘Gods’ he takes the Covenant towards Origae-6. I predict that Weyland Yutani makes a deal with David to establish a kingdom and legacy for his ‘children,’ the Xenomorphs.
